I only heard parts of the interview that just aired locally , dates back a couple of years , but I recommend catching it if you haven’t already . Interview with the founder of Patagonia, sounded like a fascinating guy, definitely a different type of company.

Doug Tompkins, the founder of North Face, was also a much different type of CEO . He bought up a bunch of land in Patagonia in order to preserve it. His widow recently handed it back over to the Chilean people and it’s been made into a series of national parks.

Very cool. Hard to conceive of being wealthy enough to buy enough land to create a single national park, much less multiple.

He was from Ohio, too. Founded North Face as a mail order company with $5k, and ended up becoming a billionaire. Ended up dying in a kayaking accident in Chile a few years ago. Not a bad way to go for an outdoorsman.
